The Gilded Chamber by Rebecca Kohn, 3 out of 5 stars.
If you enjoyed The Red Tent, you might enjoy this story of Queen Esther, who saved the Jews from destruction. Kieran was in a play about Queen Esther in early July; that's why I read this book.

I should have quit this book when I saw where it was headed. I do not recommend this--it was a waste of my time. Kind of like eating potato chips while watching a bad made-for-TV movie and pondering why you did that.
Take It Like a Mom, by Stephanie Stiles, 1 out of 5 stars.
After reading The Midwife's Confession all the way to the end right before this book (and feeling disappointed), I decided to give up on Take It Like a Mom on page 59. Did not like.
Letters to My Daughter by Maya Angelou, 3 out of 5 stars.
This book (our July book club selection) felt like Angelou had taken her (imaginary) daughter out for dinner and was sharing her sage thoughts about life. Lyrical but simple.

Nellie Monroe is a bit of an odd duck--she is naive but bright and spunky and doesn't fit in very well in her small Ohio town. She also desperately wants to be a private investigator. So when a former Amish man, Amos, asks her to find out whether his long-lost love, Katie, is going to marry another man, Nellie jumps at the chance to go undercover.

Wow, it is fascinating how different readers see books...and how one person's cup of tea is another's salty brine.

It is fascinating, isn't it? I've recommended many a book to friend only to find that she doesn't like it. (Actually, one friend in particular...I suppose our tastes vary too much.)
ReplyDeleteI liked Untied (3 stars=liked), but just felt the Midwife's Confession didn't hold together very well.
