I love Christmas. I like to choose gifts for my family and friends, share the greetings of the season, and spend time with my loved ones. But around this time of the year I start to get a bit depressed about all of the excess of the Christmas season. Why do people spend so much money on junk?
I'm not one of those people who insist on saying "Merry Christmas," even to my Jewish, Muslim, atheist, or agnostic friends. I'm more of a quiet Christian, believing it's important to live my life in the way I believe Jesus would have wanted me to live it. I believe in the Jesus who embraced the downtrodden, the outcasts, the excluded.
Jesus was a classic rebel...a true socialist. He wouldn't want us to spend all of our money on crap we don't need...he'd rather have us give it to the needy. How have we fallen so far astray? This song says it perfectly.
