Lay Catholics are rising up!

In this very dark week for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) community, with a horrible spate of gay teen suicides, here is a bright spark.

A group of progressive Catholics, including an openly gay priest and professor at Georgetown, have started up a new organization to support GLBT rights...Catholics for Equality.

What I found most fascinating in the Huff Post article (linked above) was not to observe that some very brave Catholics were willing to stick their necks out to stand up to the church's antigay teachings...but that "surveys show Catholics are more accepting of LGBT people than any other Christian group." According to a May 2010 Gallup Poll, 62 percent of Catholics said gay and lesbian relationship are "morally acceptable"--a 16 percent increase from just 4 years ago.

This reflects the beliefs of a lot of Catholics I know--both the ones who go to church and the ones who don't. I also find it interesting to reflect on all of the gay and lesbian friends I have...and observe that the majority of them were raised Catholic. It's about time someone publicly stood up to the Vatican on this issue!

  1. I simply don't understand how organized religion can espouse "loving thy neighbor" yet maintain such homophobic views.
