We Have an Author in the Family!

The parents were invited to the last day of kindergarten today for an "author's tea." The children sang a number of songs, and then the phenomenal Mrs. Lang presented each child with a portfolio of artwork, a tied-up stack of journals and books they've worked on all year, and a special author's medal. It was so sweet! Kieran was extremely proud, of course, as you can tell:

Many of the kids got up to lead the class in different songs, and Kieran led "Days of the Week" (to the tune of the Addams Family theme):

Here he is doing the motions for "Good Morning Friends" in Chinese and sign language, simultaneously!

This was the ultimate favorite song, "Tony Chestnut":

The kids touch parts of their body as they sing the words--here's a snippet:

Tony Chestnut knows I love you (toe knee chest nut nose eye love you)
Tony knows
Tony knows
Tony Chestnut knows I love you
That's what Tony knows
And his sister, Eileen
And Eileen loves Neil
And Neil loves Pat
But Pat, still loves Bob
And there's Russell and Skip
This song is silly
But it sure is hip

After the songs, Mrs. Lang showed everyone the contents of the portfolios and books. She asked Kieran whether it would be okay for her to show his portfolio. Of course, he was delighted!! The kid takes after his dad--loves to be in the limelight!

Here's Kieran receiving his bundle of goodies and getting his "medal":
The principal and the librarian came by to help--that's the principal, Mr. Blanck, pinning on the medal:
And our proud author/artist:

And taking a bow at the end of the presentation (it's easy to tell he goes to the theater all the time...):

Then we sat around with snacks and looked at their wonderful artwork and books. It's wonderful to see the progress from the fall to the spring...in his writing, drawing, and methodical thinking. In April each child did a report on an animal. Kieran chose "barn owls" (because of Harry Potter) and wrote a short report on them, including a scientific drawing. It's quite amazing what they do in kindergarten nowadays. At the end was an "About the Author" page, on which we learned that he wants to be a movie director when he grows up (another one in the family!).

He's happy to be out of school, but we will miss the wonderful Mrs. Lang. We are hoping that she'll be able to teach the third son in 3 years (she had Chris too).

Tonight we went out to Marco's to celebrate the last day of school, and this evening I'll be staying up with Chris until midnight. He has a sleep-deprived EEG in the morning, so Mike will get him up at 4:00 a.m. (I'm the night owl and Mike's the morning person...) Poor kid. I think he will love staying up until midnight, but I don't think he'll be very happy in the morning!! I'm yawning already, just thinking about it!!
